LAKE FOREST, IL: Nov. 19, 2024: Therm Solutions, Inc., an award-winning driver of food supply chain decarbonization, today announced the issuance of its first refrigerant reclamation credits in partnership with Golden Refrigerant, a Michigan-based refrigerant reclaimer. The credits, representing more than 179,000 metric tons of avoided emissions, support Therm’s mission to drive sustainable supply chains and advance the circular economy through effective refrigerant management.
Refrigerants used in commercial systems are potent greenhouse gases, with an average global warming potential over 3,000 times higher than CO₂. Many refrigerants can be purified and reused, reducing the need for new refrigerant production and thereby cutting associated emissions and waste. Despite these benefits, less than 5% of recoverable refrigerants are recycled due to high costs and operational complexity.
“These credits represent a critical step toward making refrigerant reclamation a mainstream practice in the industry,” said Fritz Troller, CEO and co-founder of Therm. “By leveraging carbon credit revenue, we’re not only driving environmental impact but also helping to shift industry norms, turning what was once seen as a costly and complex task into a standard, profitable business practice.”
Golden Refrigerant reclaims refrigerants to industry-grade purity standards, restoring them for safe reuse and creating a repeatable, closed-loop system. Their extensive network of wholesalers and grocers raises awareness among businesses that are often indifferent to the origin and disposal of their refrigerants, creating new engagement in sustainable refrigerant practices and promoting a circular economy.
Aaron Daly, a sustainability expert and co-founder of Refrigerant Emissions Elimination Forum, emphasized the broader implications of a circular refrigerant model. “With effective leak avoidance and reclamation practices, we could dramatically reduce refrigerant emissions and eliminate the need for new HFC production. This shift would not only support global climate goals but also strengthen supply chain resilience and reduce reliance on resource-intensive manufacturing.”
Golden Refrigerant provides job opportunities in Michigan, bringing on unskilled labor and offering training to help workers grow into skilled positions within the reclamation industry. This dedication to local hiring strengthens the regional workforce and fosters sustainable economic growth.
“Golden Refrigerant is a solid Midwestern company, prioritizing people, quality, and community,” added Troller. “They’re creating jobs and helping to revitalize local economies by investing in workers and developing valuable skills in the refrigerant industry.”
The new credits are now available for purchase, providing organizations an opportunity to invest in refrigerant reclamation as a climate solution that advances sustainable supply chains.
